New Business Models for Airports Landside. Insights and Challenges Based on Value Network Analysis

Abstract

There are several studies to benchmark airports through Passenger, Cargo and Movements, which are the most common and used key performance indicators. But in general these studies don’t allow establishing relationships between the ranking position of a certain airport and the value generated associated with that particular position, either within the business system of the airport or along interrelationships that it establishes with its surrounding community.

This paper proposes a new approach, the Value Network Analysis (VNA), to understand, visualize and optimize internal and external value networks of such complex economic ecosystems, thus capturing dynamics associated with the entire system.

We use the matrix of key airport performance benchmarking areas of Airport Council International (ACI), related to the landside of airports, to propose the Business System of Airport Landside Areas (BSALA) model. Furthermore a model for interface business systems of airport landside with its hinterland is suggested.
